The Shadow Cockroach Pycnoscelus nigra is a gentle, burrowing species found in Southeast Asia, and it is favored as a low-maintenance pet. P. nigra closely resembles the Surinam roach (Pycnoscelus surinamensis), but it is darker in color, displaying red-orange legs. Like the Surinam roach, it reproduces via parthenogenesis (females can give birth to young without mating), which contributes to swift colony expansion.
These cockroaches flourish on a substrate made of soil or coir, along with stacked egg crates for hiding. They thrive at room temperature but are best kept in the high 20's to 30 degrees Celsius. Their diet includes chopped vegetables and fruits, complemented by dry cockroach chow. Given the appropriate conditions, they can be very prolific!
