Peanut beetle “Ulomoides dermestoides”:
The larvae serve as nutritious live food for fish, frogs, and smaller lizards, as they are rich in protein and fat. Nevertheless, adult peanut beetles should not be used as feeders because they contain toxins that can be harmful to some creatures.
An interesting fact: Some studies indicate that specific components in peanut beetles may possess anti-cancer properties. However, consuming peanut beetles carries significant health risks due to their toxic defense substances and is not advisable.
They are easy to cultivate in a shallow, well-ventilated container using oats and peanuts as the substrate. Maintain at room temperature. Provide a piece of chopped potato or carrot once weekly to ensure adequate moisture.
Supplied as a medium size colony (approx 150 beetles, larvae, eggs and substrate) in a food grade tub.
