Why buy grindal worms online in the UK from BioCritter?
I have been producing home grown grindal worm cultures for over 10 years.
I keep the worms at around 22c all year. The substrate can be coir, potting soil, peat, organic top soil or any mixture of these. The worms are fed on a diet of high protein cat pellets, which are soaked for a few minutes prior to placing then in the containers. Grindal worms are prolific breeders under the correct conditions.
I raise the grindal worm cultures in braplast 1.3lt ventilated boxes . However, for transport, the full culture is transferred to a 650ml ventilated food grade container.
Grindal worms grow to a maximum of 1cm. They are a highly nutritious live, boasting around 70% protein, 15% fat, 10% carbohydrates, and 5% minerals by dry mass, making them excellent for growth, especially for fry, small fish and smaller amphibians.

Grindal worm history:
When Mrs. Morton Grindal initially separated them from a white worm culture in the 1950s in Sweden, the Grindal worm received its name. Grindal worms are incredibly prolific; during their lifetime, each worm can produce over 1000 progeny. These worms can reproduce entirely on their own and are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. They are perfect for raising at home because of their good nutritional profile, ease of culture, and appeal as food.

Grindal worms in Bioactive enclosures:
I consider grindal worms a must in bioactive enclosures, especially where live plants are present. They recycle organic matter and provide nutrients for the plants. Used with springtails and isopods they are excellent cage janitors.

Pests:
Like any live culture, grindal worms can attract pests, like fungus gnats or harmless compost mites. If raising the worms for fish food the fungus gnat larvae and even compost mites can be offered as fish food. Fungus gnats can be prevented by covering the air holes with filter material or, my personal favourite, micropore tape. Storing the cat food pellets in the freezer will reduce the occurrence of compost mites, as will freezing any substrate material for 48 hours prior to use. (Thaw out for at least 24 hours prior to use).
