Halloween hissing cockroach "Elliptorhina javanica". It is a fascinating species of Madagascar hissing cockroach known for its distinctive glossy black body with vibrant yellow markings. These remarkable insects are not only interesting to observe but also play a significant role in the ecosystem of their native habitat. The Halloween hissing cockroach can reach a length of approx 70mm, making it one of the larger members of its family and a substantial meal! They are often found in humid environments, where they thrive among decaying leaves and organic matter. With their unique hissing sound, produced by forcing air through tiny openings in their abdomen, they have earned a reputation as one of the most intriguing insects to study and keep as pets.
Adults are poor climbers but small nymphs can climb smooth surfaces.
Living up to 2-5 years these make excellent pets.
These cockroaches thrive on a soil or coir-based substrate, along with stacked egg crates for hiding. They do well at room temperature but should ideally be kept in the high 20's to 30 centigrade. Their diet consists of chopped vegetables and fruits, supplemented with dry cockroach chow. Under the right conditions, they can be quite prolific!
